Tour the historic Carnegie Mansion

Tour Cooper Hewitt’s home, the historic Carnegie Mansion, built for industrialist and philanthropist Andrew Carnegie and his family from 1899 to 1902. The house is a study in innovative design and advanced technology for its time. It was the first private residence in the United States to have a structural steel frame and one of the first in New York to have a residential Otis passenger elevator. Some of the rooms visited on the tour include the Great Hall, done in a style reminiscent of historic Scottish castles; the eighteenth-century inspired Music Room; and the family library (Teak Room), designed by Lockwood de Forest with teak paneling carved in India.
