Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum today announces the winners of the 2018 National Design Awards, recognizing design excellence and innovation in 10 categories. Now in their 19th year, the annual awards promote design as a vital humanistic tool in shaping the world and are accompanied by robust educational programs in cities nationwide. Caroline Baumann, Director of Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum, received the insignia of Chevalier of the Order of Arts and Letters by Bénédicte de Montlaur, Cultural Counselor of the French Embassy, at a ceremony in New York on March 5. Baumann received this distinction in recognition of her significant contributions to the fields of art and design. Also honored at the ceremony were Brett Littman, incoming director of the Noguchi Museum, and Andres Serrano, artist and photographer. Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum will present “The Senses: Design Beyond Vision” exhibition, on view April 13 through Oct. 28, which examines how multisensory design amplifies everyone’s ability to receive information, explore the world, satisfy essential needs and experience joy and wonder. “The Senses” features direct sensory experiences and displays practical, innovative and exploratory products to touch, hear, see and smell. Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum is pleased to announce two exciting leadership shifts on the board of trustees and the recruitment of its first-ever chief experience officer (CXO). Effective Dec. 1, Elizabeth Ainslie serves as chair, Scott Belsky as president and Todd Waterbury as a vice president of its board of trustees. The officer elections took place at the board of trustees meeting Sept. 26. Ainslie succeeds Barbara Mandel, who led the museum’s board for four years and will remain on the board as a trustee.
