uniting for design: Design As Protest WORKSHOP with Colloqate Design

For this year’s National Design Month, Cooper Hewitt highlights some of the inspiring organizations from around the country that share the museum’s mission to educate, inspire, and empower through design. This week’s program features the winner of the 2021 National Design Award for Emerging Designer, Colloqate Design, a multidisciplinary nonprofit design justice practice based in New Orleans with a focus on expanding community access to, and building power through, the design of social, civic, and cultural spaces.

The Design Justice movement seeks to eliminate the privilege and power structures that create and perpetuate systems of injustice in the built environment. Through workshops and trainings, Design Justice forwards the radical vision of racial, social and cultural reparation through the process and outcomes of design.

Join Colloqate for a Design as Protest workshop in pursuit of a design intervention with the explicit intention of addressing the systemic issues of injustice throughout the built environment. Participants will leave equipped with the language of design and other tools to protest these systems of injustice that show a willingness to actively perpetuate oppression in our world.

No prior experience with design is necessary.
