uniting for design: City of Design Challenge—Outdoor Cinema Showcase with Design Core

For this year’s National Design Month, Cooper Hewitt highlights some of the inspiring organizations from around the country that share the museum’s mission to educate, inspire, and empower through design. This week’s program features Detroit-based Design Core, a department within the College for Creative Studies that champions design-driven businesses and their role in strengthening Detroit’s economy.

Please join Design Core, Connect313, and College for Creative Studies for this family-friendly outdoor cinema-style event to celebrate the people and projects participating in the 2021 City of Design Challenge. The City of Design Challenge invites community-based teams to explore a particular topic or issue through the lens of inclusive design and propose projects that improve life for Detroiters. This year, we partnered with Connect313 to focus on the theme of community tech, and are proud to share the outcomes of our inaugural program during Digital Inclusion Week.

Over the summer, six teams, selected by a community jury, were chosen to develop their community tech projects and given funding, professional development, creative support, and other resources to support their process. Tonight, we will view the final videos, hear about the experience, and find out who the community jurors have chosen to receive additional funding for their projects.

This event will be streamed live and recorded. Design Core is proud to share this event as part of Cooper Hewitt’s National Design Month programming.
