About Design Scholars

Get a head start on a future in design! Teens in New York City can apply to be a DesignPrep Scholar, a free program that features hands-on workshops with professional designers, design studio visits, and college tours.

WHO SHOULD APPLY

The Design Scholars program is open to rising sophomores, juniors, and seniors enrolled in high school in New York City. Students must submit an application for the Design Scholars program. Accepted students must commit to a 1-week summer design thinking intensive from Monday, July 30 through Friday, August 3, 2018 and weekly after-school sessions from 4:30 to 6:30 pm on Tuesdays throughout the 2018-2019 school year.

Note: Students can apply for one semester or up two semesters during the 2018-19 school year. Submission of an application does not guarantee selection into the program.

Applications are due July 1, 2018.

Accepted students are required to complete a parental consent form.

option A: Design Scholars |  Architecture, Interior Design, and LAndscape ARCHITECTURE

Fall 2018 Only

Program dates: September 25, 2018 through December 18, 2018

Tuesdays, 4:30 – 6:30 PM

During Fall 2018, Design Scholars will explore architecture, interior design, and landscape architecture. Scholars will build skills in problem-solving, creative thinking, and collaboration; make real-world connections; and engage in approaches that designers use to address complex challenges. In addition to working on hands-on projects, Scholars will meet designers from different fields and visit studios to learn more about the design process.

Option B: Design Scholars | Fashion design, Graphic Design, Product Design, and Interaction Design 

Spring 2019 Only

Program dates: February 5, 2019 through May 14, 2019

Tuesdays, 4:30 – 6:30 PM

During Spring 2019, Design Scholars will explore fashion design, graphic design, product design, and interaction design. Scholars will build skills in problem-solving, creative thinking, and collaboration; make real-world connections; and engage in approaches that designers use to address complex challenges. In addition to working on hands-on projects, Scholars will meet designers from different fields and visit studios to learn more about the design process.

option c: Design Scholars | Fall and spring semesters

Fall 2018 & Spring 2019

Program dates: September 25, 2018 through December 18, 2018 and February 5, 2019 through May 14, 2019

Tuesdays, 4:30 – 6:30 PM

Students can apply for both semesters during the 2018-19 school year to study the themes explored in the Fall and Spring.

Note: Students can apply for one semester or up two semesters during the 2018-19 school year. Submission of an application does not guarantee selection into the program. Students interested in taking advantage of opportunities offered in both the Fall and the Spring are encouraged to apply using Option C.
