The Smithsonian’s Cooper-Hewitt, National Design Museum will launch the programming series Design by Hand, supported by Van Cleef & Arpels, from fall 2013 through spring 2017. This new series of bi-annual educational conversations and workshops will focus on the craftsmanship, innovations and merits of contemporary global designers. The Smithsonian’s Cooper-Hewitt, National Design Museum today announced the acquisition of the iPad music application Planetary, developed by Bloom Studio Inc., along with the underlying source code, which will be freely released to enable developers to build upon and incorporate it into other software design. Released in 2011, Planetary uses the visual metaphor of celestial bodies to represent the relationship between artists (stars), albums (planets) and tracks/songs (moons). The Smithsonian’s Cooper-Hewitt, National Design Museum today announced the acquisition of several important works to the collection, including a key early example of bentwood furniture by Marcel Breuer and Alexander Girard’s armchair for Braniff International Airways. The purchase of the 1936 Breuer Long Chair for Isokon was made possible by funding from Collections Committee member George R. Kravis II, museum trustee Judy Francis Zankel and an anonymous donor. Caroline Baumann has been named director of Cooper-Hewitt, National Design Museum in New York, effective June 16. Since joining Cooper-Hewitt in 2001, she has held many leadership positions at the museum, most recently as acting director. Baumann will oversee the only museum in the United States devoted exclusively to historic and contemporary design.
