Register for Museum Day Live! and enjoy free admission for two to Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum on Saturday, September 23, 2017. In the spirit of the Smithsonian Institution, participating museums and cultural venues across the United States open their doors to anyone presenting a Museum Day Live! ticket. Hosted by Smithsonian magazine, Museum Day Live! is an annual event to encourage everyone to participate in a day of exploration, fun, and hands-on learning.

Museum Day Live! Events

Design Kids | MONSTER MASH

For children ages five to twelve.

To celebrate September’s New York Textile Month, participants will design monsters using fabric scraps with guest designer, Elodie Blanchard.

Session 1: 11:00 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.
Session 2: 1:30 – 3:00 p.m.
FREE, but registration is recommended and will be first come, first served on Saturday.

Follow the line: Free-from drawing with Shantell Martin

2:30–4:00 p.m
FREE.
Join Shantell Martin in the Arthur Ross Terrace and Garden for a design talk moderated by Matilda McQuaid Cooper Hewitt, Deputy Curatorial Director & Head of Textiles, followed by a demonstration and drop-in drawing activity led by the multifaceted designer and artist. Materials will be provided, and the activity is open to all ages.

Making Design… and Ice Cream!

1:00–4:00 p.m.
Instagram’s Ice Cream Books and Oddfellows will be in the Arthur Ross Terrace and Garden with their custom designed ice cream inspired by the Cooper Hewitt collection handbook, Making Design. The red-beet-colored cream cheese ice cream with red velvet cake folded in plays with visual and gastronomical resonances, echoing Making Design’s nonlinear exploration of Cooper Hewitt’s permanent collection that finds visual connections among design objects.
