During the pandemic, a community of DIY rug makers emerged online. Their tool of choice was the tufting gun: a tool once only used in manufacturing to inject textured, colorful yarn loops into a cloth backing. Want to give it a try? Join us for this two-session series in rug making!

Led by Brooklyn-based rug studio Scattered Kind, participants will design and tuft their own rugs. Along the way, we will take inspiration from Cooper Hewitt’s collection of rugs and textiles. At the end of this two-session series, each participant will have their own small rug to take home.

WHAT DOES THIS WORKSHOP INCLUDE?

  • All yarn and all rug making materials
  • Instruction on how to use a tufting gun
  • Supervision throughout the entire tufting session
  • All rug finishes: Scattered Kind will glue, trim, and apply backing to your rug

SCHEDULE:

  • Monday, April 18th: Design and begin tufting our rugs, using inspiration from Cooper Hewitt’s collection.
  • Monday, April 25th: Finish rugs
  • Monday, May 2nd: Pick up your rug at Cooper Hewitt

Guest Designer

Founder Andrew Kim leaned heavily into rug tufting as a way to rediscover his creative side in the midst of the pandemic, and from there an idea was born. Scattered Kind’s mission is to bring something new and refreshing to the world of arts workshops.  From their Brooklyn studio, Scattered Kind works to make rug tufting as accessible as other forms of art and craft.
