Serving as Senior Curator and Head of the Product Design and Decorative Arts Department of Cooper Hewitt. S/he is responsible for organizing national and international exhibitions, publications, and education programs, as well as overseeing the development of the department’s collection. Serves as Cooper Hewitt’s expert in the field of 17th-and 18th-century decorative and applied arts. Supervises associate curators as well as oversees interns, fellows and other volunteers.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Researches and conducts on-going scholarly and applied research on various aspects of the museum’s 17th and 18th century permanent collection, as well as on the historical influences of earlier works on that period and from that period on works of later date.
Conceives, initiates, and develops national and international exhibitions, based on his/her expertise and knowledge of the museum’s collection of decorative arts, interior design, furniture, ornament, and other design fields.
Responsible for the continued expansion, development, and maintenance of a balanced collection.
Prepares lectures, talks and papers to be presented at local, national and international scholarly gatherings. Oversees and supervises staff and fellows/interns.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

MA or higher in Decorative Arts and Design, Art History, or Architectural History, with coursework including architecture or design history. Transcripts required (unofficial or official at the time you apply for this position). Foreign Education must also be accredited and submitted with the resume.

Demonstrated experience and documented within your resume as follows: senior curatorial experience in exhibition planning, performing original research/analysis and performing research-oriented duties in support of exhibitions, publications, acquisitions, and other projects in 17th-and 18th-century decorative and applied arts.

Demonstrated experience and documented within your resume as follows (screen out qualification requirement): Experience reading and writing in one of the following languages: French, Italian, or German in order to perform original exhibition research and for exhibition-related publications and special curatorial projects.

Knowledge of curatorial functions, especially as they relate to exhibitions, publications and research in 17th & 18th-century decorative and applied arts.

Knowledge of museum practices and procedures such as loans and acquisitions. Such as experience overseeing and managing a curatorial department devoted to decorative arts performing the full range of loans/acquisitions for a decorative and applied art department is ideal.

Ability to communicate orally in order to manage and oversee a curatorial department that involves communicating orally with a wide range of museum colleagues and curatorial staff on decorative & applied arts.

Ability to lead, plan and manage a curatorial department. Such as professional museum experience working effectively as a head curator managing a curatorial team devoted to decorative & applied arts of the 17th & 18th centuries.
