Cooper Hewitt seeks dynamic and highly customer service orientated sales associates for the new Cooper Hewitt! It is the museum’s goal to provide an amazing museum retail experience for all customers both in person and on the web. Reporting directly to the Shop Manager and working closely with the Assistant Shop Manager and the team of Sales Associates, will interact, promote and sell books, products and museum objects to museum visitors, members and ecommerce customers.

MAJOR DUTIES:
Sells and up-sells design products in the Shop to maximize profits: Welcomes all visitors to the shop in a professional and polished manner. Approaches customers to inform on Design Shop products. Provides basic information on shop products, designers and their products. Spends considerable time relating exhibition design products to customers. Shares information and problems with the Shop Manager on duty regarding customer services issues or issues with any product. Offers all customers Cooper Hewitt membership opportunities.

Provides exceptional customer service to all museum and Shop visitors: Provides prompt and accurate information to all visitors. Actively promotes all museum exhibitions and programs when interacting with visitors in the shop or the museum. Responds to and reports all customer complaints to Shop Manager on duty after attempting to listen and resolve the complaint independently following standard procedures for doing so. Ensures that all ‘special orders’ are documented and communicated to all staff to ensure customer orders are handled effectively. Actively learns about the books and designs in the shop in order to communicate and understand the product selection that is on offer in the shop. Must pursue sales with customers at all times and maintain relationships with repeat visitors. May be asked to maintain client books or remember special interests of VIP customers. Engages customers when appropriate, identifies sales opportunities, and works with the customer to complete the sale.

As a team, ensures the Shop is clean, organized and well stocked and all products are displayed properly and tagged according to shop procedures: Provides regular and on-going attention to shop cleanliness and appearance when not assisting customers. Maintains a professional appearance in order to meet with the general public or guests of the museum. Communicates stock shortages to shop management. Maintains flexibility regarding work hours to ensure the shop is always covered. May be required to work weekends and evenings.

Completes cash transactions at POS and completes end-of-day reconciliation: Accurately and efficiently perform all functions of the POS and notifies manager on duty if there is an issue or problem. Watchful at all times to protect cash and shop products (especially aware of possibilities of fake tender or theft). Reports end-of-day accurately and with approval of manager. Reports any discrepancy to Shop Manager. Uses discretion when offering discounts for damaged goods or display items. Participates in annual physical inventory and routine cycle counts.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:
Knowledge of museum books and products in order to actively promote/sell products, engage the customer, and meet shop sales goals.
Skill in customer service in order to listen and respond professionally to customer’s complaints in positive helpful manner in person or via phone.
Ability to proactively meet and greet the general public with respect and consideration.
Ability to solve routine problems relating to a guests issues or questions.
Ability to perform tasks involved in collecting cash and authorizing credit cards payments with accuracy. Strong cash handling skills required.
Skill in operating a cash register (Point of Sale). Retail Manager however is responsible for end of day reconciliation.
Ability to work in a team environment and assist in a wide variety of tasks when needed.

Additional Requirements:
• Must be able to work a flexible schedule to include weekends, holidays (especially Christmas/New Year holidays), and special events with limited notice.
• Essential position – must be able to report to duty (to the Museum located at 2 East 91st Street, NY, NY) during inclement weather conditions such as snow storms, if the museum is open.
• Punctuality is a must for this position.
• Background investigation is required with credit check.
• Must be eligible to work in the United States

Competitive Hourly Rate: $16.00
