Professor Shinichi Takemura will demonstrate his magical Tangible Earth project, an interactive multimedia representation of our planet, presented on a glowing globe that shows our world in realtime view for daylight and weather patterns. He spins it with his hands as he explains the meaning of the images, calling up a series of events and predictions about ocean currents, tsunamis, global warming, earthquake patterns and so on.

From Imperial To Contemporary: A Rediscovery of Traditional Austrian Craft and Manufacturing


Thomas Geisler will speak about contemporary design work in Austria, including Viennese tableware, 20th century and contemporary design. Thomas is design curator at the Museum of Applied Arts / Contemporary Arts (MAK) in Vienna and co-founder of Vienna Design Week which has initiated projects with contemporary designers and local traditional manufactures such as J.&L. Lobmeyr and Augarten porcelain, to protect and reinvent this extraordinary legacy of Viennese crafting skills.

Richard Kurin, Under Secretary for History, Art and Culture at the Smithsonian will moderate a discussion with Atim Oton, co-founder of the Black Design News Network, and Amy Wilentz, author and journalist, about the design implications and opportunities arising from disaster relief efforts in Haiti. Among the efforts discussed are the "Haiti Cultural Recovery Project," which focuses on the rescue and safeguard of works of art and culture that were harmed or under threat due to damaged buildings and the plan for new housing in Port-au-Prince.

Cooper-Hewitt: Sonia Delaunay - A Conversation Among Friends


Petra Timmer, design scholar and Delaunay expert, will moderate a discussion between Matteo de Monti and Elaine Lustig Cohen, as they recount their personal experiences with Sonia Delaunay and offer unique insight into the life and work of this iconic artist and designer. Matteo de Monti is the grandson of the director of Metz and Co, the Dutch department store that had a long standing collaboration with Delaunay. Elaine Lustig Cohen is a graphic designer and author of "The New Art of Color: The Writings of Robert and Sonia Delaunay."
