Piranesi as Designer


This exhibition examines the artist's role in the reform of architecture and design from the 18th century to the present. This is the first museum exhibition to show Piranesi's full range and influence as a designer of architecture, elaborate interiors and exquisite furnishings.

Rococo: The Continuing Curve

Campana Brothers Select: Works from the Permanent Collection


As the seventh curators in this exhibition series, the Brazilian design team of Fernando and Humberto Campana mined the Museum’s collection departments and chose a diverse group of more than 30 objects, dating from the 16th to the 20th centuries.

Multiple Choice: From Sample to Product


This exhibition will examine sample books and other sampling formats as tools for marketing or recording designs and techniques in a wide variety of media. Drawn from the Museum's collection, exhibition objects will include sample books of wallcoverings; woven and printed textiles; ribbons, lace and embroidery; sample plates; and drawings and prints showing design alternatives.

Wall Stories: Children's Wallpaper and Books


This exhibition will explore the relationship between wallpapers and books created for children through works from the permanent collection and the National Design Library. From their beginning in the 1870s, children's wallpapers have been strongly influenced by literature and popular culture.

Solos: Tulou/Affordable Housing for China


In the fifth installment of the Solos series, the museum will present Tulou, a prototype for affordable housing being built in the city of Guangzhou by the Chinese architectural practice Urbanus. The Tulou project incorporates 245 apartment units, a dormitory, a small hotel, shops, a gymnasium, a library, and various communal and public spaces.

Doodle 4 Google: What I Wish for the World


Doodle 4 Google: What I Wish for the World presents 39 designs selected among tens of thousands of entries submitted by K–12 students from all 50 states in Google's annual "Doodle 4 Google" design competition. Inspired by the theme "What I Wish for the World," children from across the United States were challenged to think like designers and utilize Google's iconic logo as a springboard to convey their message. The submissions represent a vast array of wishes, from environmental conservation to improvements in housing, health, and education.
