Tiles


This exhibition showcases tiles from the 13th through the 20th century, from a variety of countries and cultures including Persia, Islamic Spain, and the Netherlands. The majority of tiles are from the Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum’s permanent ceramic collection, with a portion of the objects on loan from other private and public collections. Many tiles will be displayed to the public for the first time.

Gardens of Delight


In celebration of summer, two floors of the Museum are devoted to a major exhibition on horticulture and its many reflections in art. Apart from a number of important loans, the show is drawn primarily from the Museum's permanent collection. Nearly 500 decorative objects, furnishings, paintings, prints, drawings, books, and textiles with floral motifs are included. The museum's conservatory and garden are specially planted for the occasion.

Pottery


These 100 examples represent the range of styles and time periods from the Cooper Hewitt National Design Museum’s permanent collection. Objects include work by John Turner of Staffordshire from the late 18th century, 16th-century French ceramics, Italian Majolica, and 20th-century glazed Rockwood pottery.

English Majolica


This exhibition of colorful, glazed earthenware from 19th-century England includes pieces by Minton, Wedgwood, and George Jones.

Scandinavian Modern 1880–1980


A landmark retrospective of design from Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, and Sweden. Over 330 examples of ceramics, glass, metalwork, furniture, and textiles were selected from private and public collections in Scandinavia and the United States, documenting the continuity and changes that distinguish the Scandinavian tradition in design and the decorative arts. Alvar Aalto, Tapio Wirkkala, Timo Sarpaneva, Marimekko, Hans Wagner, Georg Jensen, and Gustavsberg are among the designers whose skill and sophistication are on display.

New Vistas: American Art Pottery, 1880–1920


The 75 objects on view documents the work of American art pottery between 1880 and 1920. Companies such as Rookwood Pottery, Grueby Faience, Newcomb College Pottery, Weller Pottery, Fulper Pottery, and the University City Ceramics of St. Louis are well-represented. Individual artisans include George Ohr, Louis Comfort Tiffany, E. T Hurley, Laura Fry, Matthew A. Daly, Maria Longworth Nichols Storer, Sara Sax, and Jacques Sicard.

The Four Continents


An exhibition tracing the allegorical representation of Europe, Asia, Africa, and America on decorative objects since the 5th century. The more than 100 objects on display include ceramics, coins, glassware, maps, textiles, globes, wallpaper, and engravings. The 17th and 18th centuries are the main focus of the exhibition because of Europe's discovery of the New World. Most of the objects on view were formerly in the private collection of  James Hazen Hyde.

Berlin 1900–1933: Architecture and Design


The architecture, industrial design, graphic design, and decorative arts of Berlin, created between 1900 and 1933, are on display. Objects include handmade silver, textiles, inexpensive colorful household ceramics, Peter Behrens's electrical appliances for Allgemeine Elektricitäts-Gesellschaft (AEG), Jugendstil glass, porcelain by Marguerite Friedlaender Wildenhain, tubular steel furniture by Marcel Breuer and Mart Stam, and architectural drawings by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe.

Newcomb Pottery: An Enterprise for Southern Women, 1895-1940


This exhibition traces the history of the ceramics produced by Newcomb College, in New Orleans, where young Southern women were trained for the art industry as professional artisans. More than 200 examples of Newcomb Pottery are on view.

Memphis/Milano


This is the first major exhibition of Memphis furniture, ceramics, glassware, and drawings in New York City. Established in 1981 in Milan, Memphis is a design movement that defies the rules of classic, functional design. Works are on view from an international set of Memphis designers and architects, including Ettore Sottsass, Matteo Thun, Marco Zanini, Gerard Taylor, Martine Bedin, Michele de Lucchi, George Sowden, Andrea Branzi, Aldo Cibic, and Peter Shire. The Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum is the final stop on this traveling exhibition's tour.
