Close Observation: The Oil Sketches of Frederic E. Church


A selection of 112 works from more than 500 oil sketches in the Museum's collection. The development of Church's mastery of the medium and as well as the maturation of his individual style can be seen in these sketches, some of which are preparations for larger works while others are finished works in themselves.

Spectacular Spaces: Drawings from the Cooper-Hewitt Collection

19th-Century German Stage Design


These selections of scenic and costume designs from the Deutsches Theatermuseum in Munich serve as an important document of theater production from the German court theaters at Weimar, Berlin, Vienna, Munich, and Bayreuth. This exhibition emphasizes the familiar operatic repertory of von Webern, Mozart, Rossini, and Wagner, as well as designs for dramatic productions by Shakespeare, Goethe, and Schiller.

Puppets: Art and Entertainment


This comprehensive exhibition of historical and contemporary puppets is complemented with videos of performances and live demonstrations in the galleries. Basketry: Tradition in New Form


The exhibition of works by 10 contemporary American artists who transform ancient basket-making techniques into new forms. Both traditional and modern materials are used to craft these pieces, including reed, raffia, bamboo, grasses, willow shoots, clay, metal, and plastic cable.

The Jacquard Loom: Recent Experiments


On display are original Jacquard fabrics woven by 17 contemporary textile artists at the Rhode Island School of Design—the only school in the United States to own a jacquard loom.

Hawai'i: The Royal Isles


A view of the arts and crafts native to Hawaiian culture—first as they evolved over five hundred years without outside influence, and then as they developed following the introduction of Western culture. Among the ceremonial objects on view are feather capes worn by Hawaiian kings, hand-carved bowls, images, calabashes, tapa cloths, and shell and ivory ornaments. Architectural Fantasy and Reality (Accademia di San Luca)


An exhibition of 17th- and 18th-century drawings from the Accademia Nazionale di San Luca in Rome. The nearly 80 drawings on display were award-winning entries from an annual design competition held between 1694 and 1750. These ideal and exuberant project proposal drawings were composed by such artists as Filippo Juvarra, Bernardo Antonio Vittone, Carlo Fontana, and Carlo Marchionni.
