MANtransFORMS: an international exhibition on Aspects of Design


The opening exhibition of the Cooper-Hewitt Museum, The Smithsonian Institution's National Museum of Design. Conceived by the Vienna-based architect and designer, Hans Hollein, this exhibition examines the meaning, realities, problems, and possibilities of design in everyday life. Objects of daily use, such as a piece of cloth or a hammer, take on new dimensions and depths of meaning as they evolve and adapt in the context of different places, people, and times. Winslow Homer


This exhibition features drawings, sketches, paintings, and prints by Winslow Homer, selected from the Museum's collection. In addition to early works depicting seaside and country life, there are several charcoal sketches of Civil War soldiers in the battlefields, drawn when Homer served as an illustrator for Harper's Weekly.

More Than Meets the Eye


A comprehensive history of the Cooper-Hewitt collection. The 400 objects on display span several centuries and include textiles, drawings, prints, decorative objects, furniture, cutlery, and wallcoverings. Organized by Elaine Evans Dee, Dorothy Twining Globus, Gillian Moss, Christian Rohlfing and Milton Sonday. Funded by a grant from the New York State Council of the Arts.
