Summer Sessions » Jeannie Hopper

Liquid Sound Lounge/WBAI/Art Radio WPS1

Jeannie Hopper is the "DJ devoted to soul-infused grooves of all persuasions." -Muzik, Uk

Jeannie's long standing reputation has led her to curate Cooper-Hewitt, National Design Museum's DJ series Summer Sessions. Her sound can only be described as the Liquid Sound Lounge style, a unique blend of all things soulful, funky and fabulous. Jeannie created Liquid Sound Lounge out of a need for a radio show to encompass the many unique artists that didn't fit into the homogenized commercial radio dial, but deserved their time on the airwaves to reach a greater audience from a community perspective. The show was established in 1993 on WBAI 99.5fm, listener sponsored, non-commercial, community radio. It's the longest running prime-time radio show of it's kind airing Saturdays 7p to 9:30p est., as well as streaming real time live and archived http://archive.wbai.org.

Jeannie has DJ'd to crowds of 100 to 20,000 around the world including Serbia, Russia, Greece, Spain (including Ibiza), France, Norway, Sweden, Malaysia, and around London, incorporating a monthly residency. Her international demand came after her legendary 13 ½ hour set at Danny Tenaglia's 2001 Winter Music Conference party at Space. Her annual summer/fall dance boat cruises taking place in New York City are legendary with patrons dancing around Manhattan like they've never danced before! She's been a regular on the New York club scene with a loyal following spinning at Deep Space, 718 Sessions, Pacha, Shelter, Turntables on the Hudson, Alma, PS1 Warm Up, Element, Spirit, Melting Pot, Rotate NYC, NYC Dance Parade and more, as well as regularly DJ'ing around the United States and Canada.

Jeannie is currently the Station Manager and DJ Curator of the Art Radio, WPS1.org online radio station, and had a hand in the inception it as it came to life as the first station of its kind. WPS1.org was created by PS1 Contemporary Art Center, a MoMA affiliate, that is dedicated to arts, culture and music creating a historical aural history from the voices of than and now too the musical artists from musicians to DJ's. WPS1.org contains an archive of Jeannie's work and interviews, including "Liquid Love," a more multi-rhythmic global eclectic mix; "DJ Culture," containing in-depth interviews with stars past, present and future; and "WPS1 DJ Sessions" showcases Jeannie's dance sets and collaborations with her fellow DJ's, including Bob Sinclar, Francois K, Ben Watt and many, many more.

Jeannie's 20 years of free-form radio hosting/producing has honed her voice and led to her writing and performing lyrics on various record releases, including "Guiding Light," produced by Louie Balo Guzman. This record was featured on Deep Dish's Moscow collection on Global Underground and re-released on NRK records with a Pete Heller remix after originally being released on Hopper's own imprint label Liquid Sound Lounge. The label has released over 35 singles on the DJ tip with remixes, dubs and DJ tools. Other record releases she's written & performed in include "Nature's Discotech" with Beat Pharmacy released on WAVE 2007, "Excerpts of World Heartbeat" with Tedd Patterson, "How Many Tears" & "Negative" with Victor Simonelli, "This Track" & "Déjà vu" with Jon Cutler & Romain that was re- released with additional remixes in 2006 by Mr. V on King Street Records. http://www.liquidsoundlounge.com
