Cooper-Hewitt Mourns the Loss of Director Bill MoggridgeSunday, September 9, 2012Bill Moggridge, director of the Smithsonian’s Cooper-Hewitt, National Design Museum since 2010, died Sept. 8, following a battle with cancer. He was 69 years old. Designer of the first laptop computer and co-founder of IDEO, the renowned innovation and design firm, Moggridge pioneered interaction design and integrated human factors into the design of computer software and hardware. |

In support of the First Lady’s emphasis on education and outreach to the Washington, D.C., community, the award winners will participate in an education program for local high school students before the event. Mrs. Obama serves as the honorary patron for this year’s National Design Awards. |

Graphic Design—Now In ProductionThursday, March 15, 2012The Smithsonian’s Cooper-Hewitt, National Design Museum will present the exhibition “Graphic Design—Now in Production” at Governors Island, from May 26 through Sept. 3. Co-organized by Cooper-Hewitt and the Walker Art Center, the exhibition explores some of the most vibrant graphic design work produced since 2000, including posters, books, magazines, identity and branding, information graphics, typography and typefaces, and film and television title graphics. Admission will be free. |

Cooper-Hewitt Releases Dataset to Broaden Access to Online CollectionThursday, February 23, 2012The Smithsonian’s Cooper-Hewitt, National Design Museum today announced the release of its collection dataset, which will broaden access and allow for increased analysis of the museum’s object holdings. Basic museum data for more than 60 percent of the collection (more than 120,000 records) is now available as a single downloadable file at cooperhewitt.org/data. This open data release is the first of its kind for the Smithsonian Institution. |
