The Smithsonian Institution’s board of regents recently appointed to the board of trustees of Cooper-Hewitt, National Design Museum Jon Iwata, senior vice president, marketing and communications, IBM; Avi Reichental, president and CEO, 3D Systems; and Todd Waterbury, senior vice president, executive creative director, marketing, Target Corporation.

This May, the Smithsonian’s Cooper-Hewitt, National Design Museum will present the next installment of its Design by Hand series, which focuses on the craftsmanship, innovations and merits of pioneering design organizations. Held May 6–10 during NYCxDESIGN, the weeklong program will spotlight Heath Ceramics, whose iconic tableware and tile are still made in small runs on the premises of its Sausalito, Calif., dinnerware factory and new San Francisco tile factory, just as they have been since 1948.

Cooper-Hewitt Releases a New E-book, Favelization: The Imaginary Brazil in Contemporary Film, Fashion & Design

The Smithsonian’s Cooper-Hewitt, National Design Museum today announced the release of its fourth DesignFile e-book, Favelization: The Imaginary Brazil in Contemporary Film, Fashion & Design by Adriana Kertzer. DesignFile is a line of e-books on design writing and research published by the museum in consortium with academic and institutional partners.

Cooper-Hewitt Receives $10 Million Gift from the Morton and Barbara Mandel Family Foundation

The Smithsonian’s Cooper-Hewitt, National Design Museum has received a $10 million gift from the Morton and Barbara Mandel Family Foundation on behalf of longtime trustee and board chair Barbara Mandel and her husband Morton. The gift is the largest in the history of the museum and will support the new Cooper-Hewitt, which opens in fall 2014 with 60 percent more gallery space after a major renovation of the historic Carnegie Mansion and grounds.

Cooper-Hewitt Publishes New Blog Series on the Hewitt Family

The Smithsonian’s Cooper-Hewitt, National Design Museum today announced a new monthly blog series detailing the story of the Hewitt sisters, Amelia, Sarah, Eleanor, and their family. Co-authored by Margery Masinter, Cooper-Hewitt trustee, and Sue Shutte, historian at Ringwood Manor House Museum in Ringwood, N.J., the blog explores women’s education, design for American industry, life in the Gilded Age, fashion, travel and the early days of the Cooper Union Museum for the Arts of Decoration.

Cooper-Hewitt Awarded 2013 Ladislav Sutnar Prize

The Smithsonian’s Cooper-Hewitt, National Design Museum was awarded the 2013 Ladislav Sutnar Prize, Tuesday, Nov. 12, in Pilsen, Czech Republic, for its contribution to the world of design and the promotion of Ladislav Sutnar’s legacy and work. The prestigious award is given on behalf of the Faculty of Art and Design of the University of West Bohemia and is chosen through public nomination, followed by a jury. Caroline Baumann, director of Cooper-Hewitt, received the award on behalf of the museum.

Cooper-Hewitt, National Design Museum Announces New Board Chair and Appointment of New Trustee

The Smithsonian’s Cooper-Hewitt, National Design Museum is pleased to announce the appointment of Barbara A. Mandel as chair of its board of trustees. Mandel assumes the position from trustee Paul Herzan who will become chairman emeritus. The Smithsonian’s board of regents also voted Oct. 21 to appoint Scott Belsky to the board of Cooper-Hewitt. Led by president Beth Comstock, Cooper-Hewitt’s board includes 33 distinguished civic and business leaders dedicated to the continued growth of the museum.

PackH2O Wins the 2013 People’s Design Award

The PackH2O Water Backpack took home the 2013 People’s Design Award at the National Design Awards gala in New York, Thursday, Oct. 17. Todd Oldham announced the winning design and presented the award to president and CEO of Grief Inc. David Fischer. PackH2O attempts to solve the global clean water crisis by giving people the power to easily transport their own water.

The Smithsonian’s Cooper-Hewitt, National Design Museum will host its eighth annual National Design Week from Oct. 12 through Oct. 20. The museum will offer a series of public programs and a range of online resources for students, teachers, designers, corporate professionals and the general public to celebrate the important role that design plays in all aspects of daily life.
