PackH2O Wins the 2013 People’s Design Award

The PackH2O Water Backpack took home the 2013 People’s Design Award at the National Design Awards gala in New York, Thursday, Oct. 17. Todd Oldham announced the winning design and presented the award to president and CEO of Grief Inc. David Fischer. PackH2O attempts to solve the global clean water crisis by giving people the power to easily transport their own water.

The Smithsonian’s Cooper-Hewitt, National Design Museum today announced the selection of Janette Sadik-Khan, commissioner of the New York City Department of Transportation, as the 2013 Design Patron recipient of the National Design Awards. Unlike the other National Design Awards, which are selected by a jury of leading figures in design, the Design Patron is chosen by museum leadership.

Joining Mrs. Obama and these design legends at the White House luncheon will be 12 high school students from New York and Washington, D.C., who have demonstrated great promise and interest in the design field.

The Smithsonian’s Cooper-Hewitt, National Design Museum and Smithsonian magazine today announced the launch of the People’s Design Award contest, Sept. 10 through Oct. 11. This year, the public is invited to vote for their favorite design from a pool of 20 works that emphasizes how innovative design makes a difference in our everyday lives. The winning design will be announced live Oct. 17 at the National Design Awards Gala in New York.

Cooper-Hewitt to Host Seventh Annual National Design Week Oct. 13–21

The Smithsonian’s Cooper-Hewitt, National Design Museum will host its seventh annual National Design Week from Oct. 13 through Oct. 21. The museum will offer a series of public programs and a range of online resources for students, teachers, design professionals and the general public to celebrate the important role that design plays in all aspects of daily life. The Smithsonian’s Cooper-Hewitt, National Design Museum today announced First Lady Michelle Obama will celebrate the 2012 National Design Awards Friday, July 13, with a White House luncheon for the winners of the awards. In support of the First Lady’s emphasis on education and outreach to the Washington, D.C., community, the award winners will participate in an education program for local high school students before the event. Mrs. Obama serves as the honorary patron for this year’s National Design Awards.

Design Matters Wins the 2011 People’s Design Award

The Smithsonian’s Cooper-Hewitt, National Design Museum presented its sixth People’s Design Award to Design Matters, a show about design and culture, Thursday, Oct. 20, at its 12th annual National Design Awards gala in New York. White House Social Secretary Jeremy Bernard and musician and fashion designer Pharrell announced the winning design and presented the award to Design Matters creator Debbie Millman.
