On October 16, 2012, leading innovators and thinkers in business and design were invited to Cooper-Hewitt's Business of Design Breakfast, an annual National Design Week event, for a discussion about creative ways each community can be inspired by the other. Bob Safian, publisher of Fast Company, moderated the conversation. Themes included how design can be a productive methodology for business, provocation and its role in design to move a business forward, and the opportunities and challenges of hiring new design talent.

Join us for an evening in celebration of the life and work of Bill Moggridge, design pioneer and director of the Smithsonian's Cooper-Hewitt, National Design Museum. Bill designed the first laptop computer, co-founded the renowned innovation and design firm, IDEO, integrated human factors into the design of computer software and hardware, and championed the integral role of design in everyday life. Through his work and his playful personality, Bill touched many lives and had a lasting impact on design.

In February 2012, Cooper-Hewitt, National Design Museum, the Lemelson Foundation and the National Endowment for the Arts brought together designers, planners, inventors, and funders from Australia, Europe, Asia, Africa, and the Americas working in the public, private, and social sectors for the Social Impact Design Summit—a one-day participatory event to discuss strategies and actions to advance the field of socially responsible design.

Design that Matters, National Design Award winner for Corporate and Institutional Achievement, is a nonprofit design company that partners with social entrepreneurs to design products that address basic needs in developing countries. Led by cofounder Timothy Prestero, over 850 academic and professional collaborators have worked together to create dozens of product concepts, including a low-cost neonatal incubator using spare car parts, and a phototherapy device for treating newborn jaundice in Vietnam (see image above).

National Design Award winner Clive Wilkinson is an architect, designer, writer and strategist with particular expertise in the application of urban design thinking to interior design, specifically in workplace and educational communities. He's created unique spaces for Google, Nokia, and Disney. In 2005, Clive was inducted into the Interior Design 'Hall of Fame'. In 2006, he was named as a 'Master of Design' by Fast Company magazine and, in 2011, a 'Pioneer of Design' by IIDA.
