I first met Shinichi at the Indaba design conference in Cape Town, South Africa, where his presentation captivated everyone in the audience. I immediately asked him if he would like to be interviewed for Designing Media and he enthusiastically accepted.

Personally, I am partial to Richard Meier’s approach to architecture. According to Meier, a building is an act of “willful artificiality;” a “man-made” spatial construct that functions as a receptacle for experiencing the world of nature.

Straw and Earth


An energy-efficient straw bale house is being built on the Mall, across the street from the US Capitol. Natural builders from around the country converged on Washington DC to construct the straw shelter and a bamboo shade structure.
