Palaces for the People


This exhibition surveys 100 years of resort and motel architecture and design in the United States. The photographs and architectural drawings on display are complemented by an array of objects and ephemera, including matchboxes, menus, towels, cutlery and stationery. Organized by Richard B. To Celebrate the Moment


This exhibition documents the relationship between design and celebration. Among the objects on view are photographs of snow sculptures at Dartmouth College, printed Christmas stockings, a drawing by Erté for the “Emerald” costume worn at Paul Poiret’s 1913 Jewel Ball, greeting cards, and commemorative objects. The Shopping Bag: Portable Graphic Art


The bandboxes and shopping bags on display from the Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum's permanent collection reflect the development of consumer culture. Bandboxes of the 19th century, carry-alls without handles, were precursors to the shopping bags of today. The emergence of the shopping bag in the 20th century balanced the practical concerns of the consumer, the need to carry portable purchases, with the marketing interests of the store, which used the bag as a portable billboard.

Crystal Palaces: The Buildings of the First World’s Fairs


The exhibition displays a remarkable collection of photographs, prints, stereo views, and souvenir ephemera of the Crystal Palaces from the 1851 World's Fair in London and the 1853 World's Fair in New York. London’s Crystal Palace housed the “Great Exhibition of the Industry of All Nations;” New York's Crystal Palace, built in Bryant Park behind the New York Public Library, was destroyed by a fire just five years after its construction.

Annual Reports


An exhibition of the history of annual reports, with an eye to graphic design and printing technology. More than 250 examples are on display, and range from the minutes of a mid 17th century British textile trading firm to contemporary annual reports replete with photography. Benjamin Franklin, Milton Glaser, and Robert Miles Runyan are among the featured printers, designers, and illustrators.

Graphic Design in the Mechanical Age: Selections from the Merrill C. Berman Collection


This exhibition focuses on the intersection of art and mass media in the first part of the 20th century. A selection of 200 works selected the private Merrill C. Berman collection explores themes such as the avant-garde's impact on design and the the designer's changing role in relation to commerce, communication, and politics. The exhibition features magazine covers, book jackets, advertisements, graphic ephemera, and other objects by Man Ray, A. M. Cassandre, Leo Marfurt, Alexander Rodchenko, Kurt Schwitters. Theo van Doesburg, Vladimir and Georgii Steinberg, and Lester Beall.
