Spectacular Spaces: Drawings from the Cooper-Hewitt Collection

Originally shown as part of a larger show in Cologne, Germany, this exhibition features a selection of Cooper-Hewitt architectural drawings from the 16th to the 20th century. Shown in the Design Gallery, these rare drawings of interiors, exteriors, fountains, gardens, and stage designs balance art and architecture.

Gardens of Delight

In celebration of summer, two floors of the Museum are devoted to a major exhibition on horticulture and its many reflections in art. Apart from a number of important loans, the show is drawn primarily from the Museum's permanent collection. Nearly 500 decorative objects, furnishings, paintings, prints, drawings, books, and textiles with floral motifs are included. The museum's conservatory and garden are specially planted for the occasion.

Documenting a remarkable achievement in urban design, this exhibition explores the social history and architectural evolution of the American suburb from its 16th-century prototypes to the 20th-century concept of a "city village" through original drawings, site plans, photographs, and brochures. The exhibition allows visitors to view the work and ideas of major architects, H. H. Richardson, Frank Lloyd Wright, and M. H. Baillie Scott, as well as relatively unknown architects such as Grosvenor Atterbury, Ernest Flagg, and Electus Litchfield.

Architectural Fantasy and Reality (Accademia di San Luca)

An exhibition of 17th- and 18th-century drawings from the Accademia Nazionale di San Luca in Rome. The nearly 80 drawings on display were award-winning entries from an annual design competition held between 1694 and 1750. These ideal and exuberant project proposal drawings were composed by such artists as Filippo Juvarra, Bernardo Antonio Vittone, Carlo Fontana, and Carlo Marchionni.

City Dwellings and Country Houses: Robert Adam and His Style

The first major American exhibition of the 18th-century Scottish architect and designer, Robert Adam, and his circle. Selected from public and private collections in Scotland, England, and the United States, this exhibition surveys Adam's extraordinary accomplishment through a selection of more than 100 drawings, furniture, silver, ceramics, and decorative objects.

American Picture Palaces

The movie palaces of the early 20th century are the subjects of this exhibition. Original furnishings, signs, photography, film footage, and architectural drawings from dozens of theaters bring the “Golden Age” of the American moviegoing experience to life. Among the featured theaters are New York City's Roxy Theatre, Paramount Theatre, and Radio City Music Hall, and Hollywood's Pantages Theatre.

The Carnegie Mansion Embellished

To celebrate its 75th birthday, the Cooper-Hewitt Museum invited friends to submit works embellishing upon an architectural elevation of the Carnegie Mansion—a National Historic Landmark. The exhibition features the creative responses of numerous designers, architects, artists, photographers, and design enthusiasts, including Donald Deskey, Raymond Loewy, Ivan Chermayeff, Leo Lionni, Bill Cunningham, Shigeo Fukuda, Helen Frankenthaler, Horst P. Horst, Francesc Torres, Edward Fella, and Milton Glaser. This project was inspired by Charles Addams.

The Amsterdam School: Dutch Expressionist Architecture 1915–1930

On view are 100 architectural drawings by Michel de Klerk and his colleagues. These drawings depict both completed public and commercial commissions as well as designs for buildings that were never constructed.

Frank Lloyd Wright and the Prairie School

This exhibition examines Wright in the context of his midwestern contemporaries, a group collectively known as the Prairie School. The drawings, photographs, furniture, and ornament on display features Wright's work alongside that of architects including Louis Sullivan, Barry Byrne, Marion Mahoney, William Purcell, and Walter Burley Griffin.
