The Opulent Eye of Alexander Girard

This exhibition explores the work of artist Alexander Girard (1907-1993), one of America's most innovative 20th century designers. Unique in postwar American design, Girard created textiles as well as graphics, interiors, and furnishings that introduced modern design to millions of Americans.  Organized by Donald Albrecht, Curator of Special Projects.

Masterpieces from the Vitra Design Museum: Furnishing the Modern Era

This exhibition features 100 chairs designed between 1920 and 1980 from the Vitra Design Museum in Weil am Rhein, Germany. These masterpieces highlight the concepts, styles, and materials central to furniture design in the modern era. Chairs in wood, metal, glass, and synthetics, are prominently featured. The exhibition is organized into six sections—Technology, Construction, Organic Design, Reduction, Decoration, and Manifesto—and includes works by Alvar Aalto, Marcel Breuer, Le Corbusier, Frank Lloyd Wright, and many others.

Glass of the Avant-Garde: From Vienna Secession to Bauhaus

More than 100 glass objects from the Torsten Brohan Collection of the Museo Nacional de Artes Decorativas, Madrid, are displayed in this exhibition. These objects were produced in Austria, the Czech Republic, and Germany between the turn of the century and the years between the two World Wars and include the work of the Bauhaus, Wilhelm Wagenweld, and Wiener Werkstätte.

Russel Wright: Creating American Lifestyle

Fashion in Colors

Fashion in Colors explores color as a design element through 300 years of Western fashion, and examines the changing perceptions and meanings of color through various eras. More than 60 costumes are on display, ranging from 18th century court gowns and 19th-century bustled dresses to 20th century couture creations by masters such as Coco Chanel, Christian Dior, Elsa Schiaparelli, Emilio Puce, Christobal Balenciaga, Rei Kawakubo/Comme des Garçons, and Viktor & Rolf.

Looking Forward/Looking Back: Recent Acquisitions in 20th and 21st Century Design

Set in Style: The Jewelry of Van Cleef & Arpels

Since its opening on the Place Vendôme in Paris in 1906, Van Cleef & Arpels has played a leading role in style and design innovation. Its timeless pieces have been worn by style icons including the Duchess of Windsor, Grace Kelly and Elizabeth Taylor. This exhibition will explore the historical significance of the firm's contributions to jewelry design in the 20th century, including the establishment of Van Cleef & Arpels in New York with the advent of World War II.

Cooper-Hewitt Visits Smart Design

Cooper-Hewitt recently acquired several original prototypes and drawings used to develop OXO's Good Grips product line. Cooper-Hewitt curators identified this line for the museum's collection because the products were a game-changing innovation iconic of late 20th century design.
