Cooper-Hewitt Announces Fourth Annual National Design Week

Cooper-Hewitt, National Design Museum will host its fourth annual National Design Week from Oct. 18 through Oct. 24. The museum will offer free museum admission, sponsored by Target, along with a series of public programs and a range of online resources for students, teachers, design professionals and the general public to celebrate the important role that design plays in all aspects of daily life.

The Smithsonian’s Cooper-Hewitt, National Design Museum will celebrate outstanding achievement in design this fall with its 10th annual National Design Awards program, which includes free museum admission to all visitors throughout National Design Week, sponsored by Target, Oct. 18-24; a gala dinner honoring the winners and finalists Oct. 22 at Cipriani 42nd Street in New York; and a special exhibition commemorating winners honored during the first decade of the program.

The Smithsonian’s Cooper-Hewitt, National Design Museum will celebrate outstanding achievement in design this fall with its 10th annual National Design Awards gala dinner Oct. 22 at Cipriani 42nd Street in New York. The winners and finalists were first announced April 30 and honored at a White House luncheon July 24.

The Smithsonian’s Cooper-Hewitt, National Design Museum will host A City of Neighborhoods, a professional development program for K-12 teachers, in San Antonio Aug. 3–7. A City of Neighborhoods will bring together 32 educators from all disciplines from across the country for a five-day workshop of interactive activities—walking tours, workshops and presentations by leading design experts—that demonstrate how to incorporate design thinking into classrooms.

Reynold Levy, president of Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts, has been selected the winner of the 2009 Design Patron Award by Paul Warwick Thompson, former director of the Smithsonian’s Cooper-Hewitt, National Design Museum. Levy is being recognized for his design stewardship of the Lincoln Center campus renovation project.

Stuart Bohart and Marissa Mayer Join Cooper-Hewitt Board of Trustees

The Smithsonian Institution’s board of regents voted to appoint Stuart Bohart and Marissa Mayer to Cooper-Hewitt, National Design Museum’s board of trustees. Bohart, managing director, investment management at Morgan Stanley, has been with the global financial services firm for more than 10 years. Mayer joined Google in 1999 as its first female engineer and 20th employee, and functions as the principle designer of company's look and feel.

The Smithsonian’s Cooper-Hewitt, National Design Museum will celebrate the 10th anniversary of the National Design Awards with free public programs that explore the intersection between design and the world around us. Several of the National Design Award winners will be part of a series of concurrent public programs from 10 to 11 a.m., Friday, July 24, at museums around the Mall. Later that day, First Lady Michelle Obama will host the White House ceremony for the winners and finalists of the 2009 awards and serve as honorary patron for the awards program.
