Cooper-Hewitt, National Design Museum Announces Winners of the 14th Annual National Design Awards Thursday, May 9, 2013 The Smithsonian’s Cooper-Hewitt, National Design Museum will celebrate outstanding achievement in design this fall with its 14th annual National Design Awards program. Today, Cooper-Hewitt acting director Caroline Baumann announced the winners of the 2013 National Design Awards, which recognize excellence and innovation across a variety of disciplines. The award recipients will be honored at a gala dinner Thursday, Oct. 17, at Pier Sixty in New York.

Cooper-Hewitt Announces Harlem Focus Series Friday, April 19, 2013 This spring, the Smithsonian’s Cooper-Hewitt, National Design Museum will launch the Harlem Focus programming series highlighting designers, architects and artists whose work engages and affects the local Harlem community. The museum will feature a series of talks curated and led by architectural consultant and Harlem historian John Reddick at the Cooper-Hewitt Design Center (111 Central Park North, New York).
New Collection Acquisitions Span Centuries and Disciplines at Cooper-Hewitt Thursday, March 21, 2013 Design Watch members have chosen architect and glassmaker Carlo Scarpa’s “Model 3461” vase, made at the Venini glassworks, as a gift to join the permanent collection of the Smithsonian’s Cooper-Hewitt, National Design Museum. Members of Design Watch, museum supporters, were invited to hear object presentations from curators in each of the museum’s four curatorial departments and vote on a design object to be purchased using proceeds from their membership dues. The museum today announced the acquisition, along with several other works.
Cooper-Hewitt Announces Publication of White Paper and Panel Event on Socially Responsible Design Thursday, February 21, 2013 The Smithsonian’s Cooper-Hewitt, National Design Museum today announced the publication of the white paper Design and Social Impact: A cross-sectoral agenda for design education, research and practice, along with a panel discussion on the paper’s findings and proposals to be held Feb. 21 in New York. The paper is an outgrowth of the 2012 Social Impact Design Summit at The Rockefeller Foundation, which was hosted by Cooper-Hewitt, The Lemelson Foundation, the National Endowment for the Arts and the Surdna Foundation to discuss strategies and actions to advance the field of socially responsible design—one term that refers to the practice of design for the public good, especially in disadvantaged communities.
2013 Design Talks Series to Feature National Design Award Winners Thursday, January 24, 2013 Design Talks, a vibrant conversation and presentation series organized by the Smithsonian’s Cooper-Hewitt, National Design Museum, will run from March through May at the Cooper-Hewitt Design Center in Harlem in New York City. This year’s series will feature winners from the 2012 National Design Awards and focus on collaborative aspects of design.
Cooper-Hewitt Launches DesignFile Publishing Initiative Tuesday, January 8, 2013 The Smithsonian’s Cooper-Hewitt, National Design Museum today announced the launch of DesignFile, a new line of e-books on design writing and research published in consortium with academic and institutional partners. The line will release at least six to 12 titles annually during its first three years. Among the three publications to be released Feb. 1 are Design Cult by Steven Heller, The Miser’s Purse by Laura Camerlengo and Hacking Design by Avinash Rajagopal, all of which are priced at $2.99. DesignFile is the latest publishing initiative of Cooper-Hewitt, following the establishment of an independent publishing imprint in 2006.
Cooper-Hewitt Launches Object of the Day to Expand Collection Access Thursday, November 15, 2012 The Smithsonian’s Cooper-Hewitt, National Design Museum today announced the launch of Object of the Day, a new section of the website designed to foster ongoing engagement with Cooper-Hewitt’s collection while the museum is undergoing renovation (www.cooperhewitt.org/object-of-the-day). Object of the Day features a new collection work daily and draws from more than 217,000 objects spanning 30 centuries in four curatorial departments—Drawings, Prints and Graphic Design, Product Design and Decorative Arts, Textiles and Wallcoverings—and the National Design Library.
