Cooper-Hewitt Launches Object of the Day to Expand Collection Access

The Smithsonian’s Cooper-Hewitt, National Design Museum today announced the launch of Object of the Day, a new section of the website designed to foster ongoing engagement with Cooper-Hewitt’s collection while the museum is undergoing renovation (www.cooperhewitt.org/object-of-the-day). Object of the Day features a new collection work daily and draws from more than 217,000 objects spanning 30 centuries in four curatorial departments—Drawings, Prints and Graphic Design, Product Design and Decorative Arts, Textiles and Wallcoverings—and the National Design Library.

Cooper-Hewitt Mourns the Loss of Director Bill Moggridge

Bill Moggridge, director of the Smithsonian’s Cooper-Hewitt, National Design Museum since 2010, died Sept. 8, following a battle with cancer. He was 69 years old. Designer of the first laptop computer and co-founder of IDEO, the renowned innovation and design firm, Moggridge pioneered interaction design and integrated human factors into the design of computer software and hardware.

The Smithsonian’s Cooper-Hewitt, National Design Museum today announced a new off-site space to be used for educational programming for students, families, educators and adults. Located at 111 Central Park North in New York’s rapidly developing Park Heights/Harlem neighborhood, the Cooper-Hewitt Design Center will open in May, thanks to generous support from Target.

Cooper-Hewitt Releases Dataset to Broaden Access to Online Collection

The Smithsonian’s Cooper-Hewitt, National Design Museum today announced the release of its collection dataset, which will broaden access and allow for increased analysis of the museum’s object holdings. Basic museum data for more than 60 percent of the collection (more than 120,000 records) is now available as a single downloadable file at cooperhewitt.org/data. This open data release is the first of its kind for the Smithsonian Institution.

Smithsonian’s Cooper-Hewitt, National Design Museum is pleased to announce the appointment of Beth Comstock as president and Judy Francis Zankel as secretary of its board of trustees. The Smithsonian’s board of regents voted Jan. 23 to appoint Dr. Alberto Eiber to the board of Cooper-Hewitt.

The Smithsonian’s Cooper-Hewitt, National Design Museum is pleased to announce the appointment of Seb Chan as director of digital and emerging media, effective Nov. 28. By creating this new role, Cooper-Hewitt places digital at the center of the museum’s redevelopment and transformation into a 21st century museum, integrating web and social media−blogs, Twitter, Facebook, YouTube−with mobile experiences and ensuring that these endeavors remain sustainable. Chan will lead a digital renewal at the museum, elevating and expanding Cooper-Hewitt’s online user experience alongside its physical renovation period and reopening in 2013.

The “Set in Style: The Jewelry of Van Cleef & Arpels” exhibition attracted a record-breaking 172,000 visitors during its 20-week run at the Smithsonian‟s Cooper-Hewitt, National Design Museum. On view from Feb. 18 through July 4, visitation to “Set in Style” exceeded the previous exhibition attendance record holder, “Design Life Now: National Design Triennial 2006.”
