Object of the Month: Finnish HopPosted by Susan Brown, on Wednesday October 03, 2012The Lindy Hop was a swing dance phenomenon, but the Finnish Hop? This lively design was produced by the artists’ collective know as The Folly Cove Designers, for its location near Gloucester on the Massachusetts coast. Many Finnish immigrants had settled there, attracted by skilled work in the granite quarries or the boat building industry. At least half a dozen Finnish immigrants or Finnish-Americans were members of the collective, including Eino Natti and Aino Clarke, who produced large numbers of textile designs. textile design, Virginia Demetrios, The Folly Cove Designers, Object of the Month, 20th century, American, dance |

Design and Food Journal 01: Planting the FlagPosted by Andrea Lipps, on Wednesday September 05, 2012In this Research-in-Progress blog series, I’ll be testing ideas and sharing what piques my interest around design and food, part of early ongoing research I’m undertaking here at Cooper-Hewitt in preparation for an exhibition. I view this space as an important part of the process, pulling back the curtain, if you will, on initial thinking that will shape the exhibition. Consider it your special backstage tour. This journal will therefore get messy, but that’s precisely the intention – to have a space where ideas can emerge, develop, be thrown out or be enriched. I’m thirsty for suggestions and feedback, so please do share. Design and Food, food, contemporary design, ceramics, exhibitions |

Never Fast Forward the Credits!Posted by Sarah Hopkins, on Friday August 24, 2012One focus of Cooper-Hewitt’s current exhibition, Graphic Design—Now in Production, is the field of motion graphics. The exhibition features the opening credits of television series, like Six Feet Under and Dexter. Cooper-Hewitt asked Twitter followers which TV shows and movies they thought feature great title sequence design. A big thank you to followers @Epavisha, @Kmhaag, @Kelseykrz, @Cmoa, and @Yarngeek for their keen eyes for graphics on screen. And, next time you go to the movies, give credit to the credits! movies, graphic design, exhibitions, film, film credits |
