Reflections from a Queensland fellowEvery year, the Queensland-Smithsonian Fellowship Program provides the opportunity for one Queensland school teacher to travel to New York to work in the Cooper-Hewitt’s Education Department for the summer. They develop knowledge and skills to apply and share with students and colleagues back in Queensland as well as contribute their unique vision to programs offered by the Department. |

A wilted icon at Design Miami/With a dark streak that carries across their work, it is not surprising that Dutch design firm Studio Job has anthropomorphized the Eiffel Tower, wilted in sad defeat. Design Miami/, contemporary design, decorative arts, Studio Job, lamp, bronze, Eiffel Tower |

Design and food at Design Miami/Design and food continues to be an area of design practice garnering attention as it pushes at the boundaries of what we think of as traditional design. (Full discloser, I am organizing an exhibition on the subject.) Case in point: Design Miami/’s first BE OPEN Forum includes eating designer Marije Vogelzang on its roster. Object of the Month: Finnish HopThe Lindy Hop was a swing dance phenomenon, but the Finnish Hop? This lively design was produced by the artists’ collective know as The Folly Cove Designers, for its location near Gloucester on the Massachusetts coast. Many Finnish immigrants had settled there, attracted by skilled work in the granite quarries or the boat building industry. At least half a dozen Finnish immigrants or Finnish-Americans were members of the collective, including Eino Natti and Aino Clarke, who produced large numbers of textile designs. textile design, Virginia Demetrios, The Folly Cove Designers, Object of the Month, 20th century, American, dance |
