Cooper Hewitt seeks a dynamic retail leader to serve as Shop Manager for the new Cooper Hewitt! It is the museum’s goal to provide an amazing retail experience for all customers both in person and on the web. Reporting directly to the Director of Retail, the Shop Manager will manage a shop associate team (10 to 12 employees) and will interact with museum visitors, members and ecommerce customers. This position will provide a great opportunity to lead museum retail, merchandising and ecommerce. Must be able to work late evenings, weekends and other extended hours as needed.
Responsible for the overall performance and operation of the Retail Shop. Manage the physical shop space and recruit, manage and train 10 to 12 part-time/full-time sales staff. Oversees Shop associates to ensure that employees provide courteous and welcoming interaction with customers and members and maintain up to date knowledge of products. Ensures that the highest standards of client service are maintained at all times and that prompt and attentive service are consistently provided to all shop and museum visitors. Responsible for managing the daily sales operations of the Shop and leading/mentoring sales associates to maximize profitability (sales goals) while furthering the Museums’ mission.
Is responsible for the daily opening, closing, and security of the shop and the accountability, custody, and distribution of large sums of cash used in shop operations. Maintains manual and automated systems that control merchandise shrinkage and allows for an orderly cash flow, the maintenance of a cash reserve, the accountability of funds, and the security of the contents of the office safe. Operates a cash register as needed.
Is responsible for the care and the appearance of display and stock areas. Assures that the selling floor is fully stocked and in pristine condition.
Oversees the flow of inventory from stock areas to the shop floor and works closely with buyers, sales assistants and stock manager to coordinate the timely movement of merchandise. Keeps buyers advised of merchandise levels; advises them when reorders are necessary; and restocks merchandise and supplies as they are received. Assures that merchandise ticketing, price changes and orders are handled in accordance with established procedures. Handles customer phone orders, processes these transactions in a timely manner; and provides mailing and delivery information to back office staff.
Is responsible for weekly sales analysis to ensure that sales per visitor numbers and goals are maintained and actively makes changes when necessary to ensure highest sales per visitor numbers. Will use this knowledge to make proposals regarding different types of product, price points, or categories of products that are lacking to ensure that the shop is meeting the expectations of the visitor. Will be actively involved in product development and selection with increased experience.
Makes recommendations about merchandise based on requests or comments from visitors. Assists with merchandise display for special exhibitions and events. Coordinates the scheduling of shop operations with other museum staff for special events. Ensures that appropriate merchandise information and provenance cards are available for merchandise sold in the shop. Sets up and runs satellite shops at off-site locations and for special events.
Marks down damaged or shopworn merchandise and submits reports to the supervisor. Assists with coordinating and preparing staff and stock areas for annual physical inventory. Will help develop plans to implement the inventory process; organizes and assigns staff and workload; and reconciles inventory in accordance with established procedures.
Will actively promote shop events and press coverage to ensure increased visibility with editorial credit, blogs, and any other appropriate spheres. Will make recommendations to various publications of CH products. Works with museum Communications department to actively increase press coverage for The Shop and products. Will manage and promote shop events including press releases, product selection, shop VIP customer lists and special projects. Will manage new monthly or quarterly press blast to all shop customers about new products or exciting happenings at The Shop.
Provides leadership and administrative guidance to staff and motivates staff to achieve organizational goals and sales results. Provides on-the-job training to shop staff in selling skills and procedures, shop operations, product knowledge, inventory numbering systems, the operation of cash registers, the discount system, security and loss prevention, and the general policies and procedures. Recommends additional formal training to ensure quality service and technical competence.
• Experience managing a design, fashion or art focused retail shop.
• A degree in a related field of study such as business administration, arts administration or art history is a plus.
• Experience maintaining a positive working environment to encourage, motivate and retain high quality retail staff.
• Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to communicate effectively and diplomatically with staff, and the general public and to resolve complaints quickly and effectively.
• Ability to provide exceptional customer service and lead by example in servicing the general public.
• Bi-lingual is a plus.
• Must be able to work a flexible schedule to include weekends, holidays, and special events with limited notice.
• Punctuality is a must for this position. Hours will generally be 9:00AM to 6:00PM

Salary – $48,000
