INTERVIEWS

Traditionally addressed at narrow audiences trained to ignore the sensual appeal of design, academic books have earned a reputation for dry and dusty graphic presentation. Some presses have respectfully maintained the standards of classical typography, resulting in books of beauty and permanence, while others have gently updated classical structures by turning to such modernist principles as asymmetry and multiple typefaces. Although few academic publishers have pursued an overtly experimental approach, MIT Press is a notable exception. Under the design direction of Muriel Cooper during the 1970s, the press tested new ideas in typography, layout, and production. Today, MIT remains one of the more graphically ambitious university publishers in the United States.
