The group's logo consists of the phrase "Silence = Death" written over a pink triangle. The triangle recalls the pink tags sewn on the sleeves of homosexuals in Nazi prison camps; by inverting the triangle, the Silence = Death symbol aimed to suggest resistance and strength. Rejecting the handmade "outsider" look associated with an earlier generation of political artists, designers working with ACT UP New York created posters, flyers, and other ephemera in a confident style that emulated the authority of advertising and journalism. ACT UP distributed these graphics in conjunction with "actions" performed in public places, from Wall Street to the White House.
