The World Wide Web is a design in progress. In the past few years, it has evolved from a text-based environment used primarily by physicists to a rich visual environment shared by millions of individuals, special interest groups, corporations, and institutions. It is an evolving landscape of many voices seeking to create a presence or identity in an elusive and unpredictable medium. It is also a growing community of voices looking to interact with each other. Graphic design on the Web has provided a dynamic visual language to give shape to this mix of voices and context to their communities.
