The period from the 1930s through the 1950s was the golden age of American industrial design, and Henry Dreyfuss (1904-1972) was one of its foremost pioneers. Best known for his revolutionary designs of such everyday household items as the Princess telephone, Westclox Big Ben and Baby Ben clocks, and the Hoover vacuum cleaner, the highly versatile Dreyfuss enhanced the daily lives of millions of Americans.
This first monograph on Dreyfuss surveys the life and work of this unconventional creator of icons. A substantial biographical text presents a detailed picture of Dreyfuss as a savvy businessman and innovator, while the striking graphic design conveys the elegance of his streamlined style. Extraordinary archival and new photographs showcase his diverse designs, from the small Honeywell wall-mounted thermostat to the Twentieth Century Limited train car and its interior (including tableware!). Dreyfuss also turned his considerable talents to Deere & Co. tractors the 1943 redesign of Time magazine, and government projects during the Second World War for which he received top security clearance, all of which are pictured and discussed in this volume.
