The Cooper-Hewitt Scholars students had a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to work with the master model maker from Van Cleef & Arpels, Sophie Pean. Sophie, who trained at an institution founded by Louis XIV is known to VC&A as a living treasure. Sophie showcased her talent by translating two dimensional sketchs into three dimensional wax models of a jewelry piece. Using saws, metal files, solderers, and intricate tools, students transformed wax blocks into a refined prototype representing their own personal style of jewelry.

The students created some truly breathtaking designs and were surprised a few weeks later with the opportunity for a one-on-one critique with VC&A Creative Director Nicolas Bos. After each student presented their creations, Nicolas took the time to examine each piece and comment on their designs. Our Scholars students were inspired and invigorated by Nicolas’ advice to “take risks” and to design as if “nothing is impossible.”
